To make a day of it

Burgruine Riegelstein stands in Betzenstein (Landkreis Bayreuth), in Bavaria, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. No visits are on record for this building.

The Burg Riegelstein stands in ruins atop a wooded rocky ridge north of the village of Riegelstein, part of the town of Betzenstein. Built around 1200, it later became the seat of the ministerial family von Türriegel, who took their name from it in the early 15th century. The castle was wrecked after occupation by Bavarian electoral troops during the Thirty Years' War and today retains only a neck ditch, a section ditch and scattered wall remnants. Now overgrown with forest, the rock outcrop also serves as a climbing spot.

What to know

  • Access is on foot from the village of Riegelstein, with the final stretch leading off any marked path.
  • The site is outdoors and freely accessible, with no opening hours or admission fee.
  • Only ditches and scant wall remains survive, so this is not a reconstructed castle.
  • The terrain is rocky and uneven, including a climb onto the rock outcrop to reach the upper castle site.
  • Climbers also use the castle rock as a climbing spot.
