To make a day of it

Burg Wilnsdorf stands in Wilnsdorf (Kreis Siegen-Wittgenstein), in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.

The Burg Wilnsdorf no longer stands: it was a hillside castle at 372 metres above sea level, within what is now the municipality of Wilnsdorf, destroyed in the Middle Ages. Its site, which overlooked the upper Heckenbach valley, is now occupied by the village's Protestant church, built in 1913 over the old foundations. There is no building to visit, only a place whose past survives through faint traces in the townscape.

What to know

  • No building of the castle survives; the Protestant church, built in 1913, now stands on its site.
  • Remnants of the castle moat can still be seen behind a house on Mainzer Straße.
  • Street names such as Burgstraße and Kolbestraße, and the field name Im Graben, recall the former extent of the site.
  • A visit amounts to a walk through the village, with no set opening hours or organised access.
  • As the site has no tourist facilities, there is no entrance fee or marked trail.
