To make a day of it
Burg Hainchen stands in Netphen (Kreis Siegen-Wittgenstein), in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
Burg Hainchan is a former moated castle on the edge of Hainchen, a district of Netphen in the Siegerland region. First recorded in 1290 and long held by the von Bicken family, it was the birthplace in 1564 of Johann Adam von Bicken, who later became Archbishop and Elector of Mainz. After falling into ruin, with two of its four towers demolished in the 19th century, the castle was fully rebuilt in the 1970s following historical models and now serves as a retreat and care facility. Visitors can still see an oak door dating from 1557, the medieval vaulted cellar and the cross-vaulted old kitchen.
What to know
- The castle now houses a care institute for elderly and disabled people, which limits public access to the interior.
- The surrounding park of about 33,000 square metres serves as a cultural meeting space and can be explored from the outside.
- No exact construction date is known, the earliest written record dating from 1290.
- The building seen today results from a reconstruction carried out between 1976 and 1977 following historical plans.
