To make a day of it
Burg Tölz stands in Bad Tölz (Landkreis Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen), in Bavaria, Germany. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
Burg Tölz once stood in Bad Tölz, on the banks of the Isar, in the Landkreis Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen, Bavaria. It is first recorded in the late twelfth century as the seat of Heinrich der Tölzer, a representative of the Bavarian duke, whose name gave the settlement its own. Later enlarged into a Schloss, it was swept away by a flood of the Isar in 1770, south of the upper market street. As a result there is no building left to visit, only a site tied to the town's early history.
What to know
- No visible remains of the Burg or of the later Schloss survive, both having been destroyed by a flood of the Isar in 1770.
- The site lay south of the upper market street of Bad Tölz, close to the course of the Isar.
- A visit here amounts to a historical stop within a walk through Bad Tölz's old town rather than a building tour.
- The town's own name derives from Heinrich der Tölzer, the lord recorded at this Burg around 1180.
