Burg Kirchberg stands in Hohenthann, in Lower Bavaria, on a site local tradition links to a Roman fort of the 3rd century, though no document confirms this early period. The buildings seen today date from the 14th century and were raised by the lords of Kirchberg, with a circular brick-built enclosure wall and a massive keep measuring ten by ten and a half metres, its walls three metres thick. The lower level of that keep still holds the castle chapel of St Leonhard. A restoration carried out in the 1990s earned the owners an award from Munich's Hypo-Kulturstiftung foundation.
