To make a day of it
Burg Horstmar stands in Horstmar (Kreis Steinfurt), in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.
The Burg Horstmar is a vanished medieval fortress, now reduced to earthworks on the northwestern edge of the town of Horstmar. First recorded in 1154, it was the seat of the lords of Horstmar before coming under the authority of the Prince-Bishop of Münster, and it was destroyed in 1635 during the Thirty Years' War. Ground-penetrating radar surveys in 2021 uncovered the foundations of a massive round keep roughly 14 metres in diameter, shedding new light on the site's layout. What remains to be seen today is mainly a landscape of ditches and remnants of ramparts rather than standing buildings.
What to know
- No standing building remains; the site consists of open-air ditches and remnants of earthen ramparts.
- Access is free and unrestricted, as this is an open archaeological site without opening hours or tickets.
- The 2021 radar findings lie underground and are not visible directly on site.
- The sloping ground calls for a moderate walk rather than being easily accessible to everyone.
