To make a day of it

Burg Heidenkeller stands in Ettenheim (Ortenaukreis), in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.

The Burg Heidenkeller sits on a hilltop at 354 metres above sea level, on the southern slope of the Münstertal near the Münchweier district of the town of Ettenheim. Rather than a medieval castle, it is the remnant of an early fortified refuge, thought to date from pre-Christian Celtic times. The site enclosed an area of roughly 75 by 35 metres, largely surrounded by an earthen rampart, with a ditch to the south that has since been mostly filled in. In the early nineteenth century, its stones were reused to build an octagonal viewing pyramid offering a view over the Rhine plain.

What to know

  • No standing structure remains: only the earthen rampart and traces of the ditch can still be seen on the ground.
  • The site lies on a hillside in the Münstertal, so reaching it involves an uphill walk from Münchweier or Ettenheim.
  • There are no fixed opening hours, fees, or accessibility arrangements, as the site is an open-air location.
  • An octagonal viewing pyramid built from the castle's stones now offers a view over the Rhine plain.
