Burg Falkenstein sits on a granite outcrop rising some sixty metres above the Perlbach valley, overlooking the health resort of Falkenstein. First documented in the twelfth century as a stronghold fought over by the bishops of Regensburg and various noble families, it passed through the hands of the counts of Bogen, the lords of Hohenfels and later the Bavarian dukes. On a clear day the view from its tower reaches as far as the Großer Arber peak in the Bavarian Forest.
