To make a day of it

Burg Calenberg stands in Pattensen (Region Hannover), in Lower Saxony, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. No visits are on record for this building.

Near Pattensen, in the Schulenburg district within the Leine valley, lie the ruins of the medieval stronghold of Calenberg Castle. Duke Otto the Strict established it in 1292 as a moated fortress, and the Welf Principality of Calenberg later took its name from the site, before the castle was reconstructed as a fortification in the early 1500s. The Thirty Years' War left it in ruins, leaving only underground vaults enclosed by tall earthworks. Visitors today can explore these archaeological remains, still bordered by the original moats and ramparts.
