Burg Ammerthal was a medieval hilltop fortress of which no visible remains survive above ground today. Founded around the year 800 by the Babenberg family, destroyed in 1003 and later rebuilt, it passed through many hands over the centuries, from the counts of Schweinfurt to the lords of Ammerthal. Excavations revealed that stones from its former chapel were reused in the construction of the nearby Liebfrauenkirche church.
