The Burg Altweilnau stands in ruins above the Weil valley in Altweilnau, perched on a rocky spur. Built around 1200 by the counts of Diez, it retains a massive round keep along with remnants of its curtain wall. Inhabited until the sixteenth century, the castle was gradually abandoned after the Thirty Years' War, its stones later reused in the village houses. The keep, restored between 1980 and 1986, can be climbed and gives a wide view over the valley and toward Schloss Neuweilnau opposite.
