To make a day of it

Bodendenkmal in Marklkofen, #D-2-7441-0023 stands in Marklkofen (Landkreis Dingolfing-Landau), in Bavaria, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.

The Turmhügel Poxau is a medieval mound fortification in the hamlet of Poxau, part of Marklkofen in Bavaria. No original structure survives; what remains is the shape of the land itself, a steep-sided cone cut off by a semicircular ditch open to the south. By the early 18th century at the latest, the mound had been reshaped into a Way of the Cross with a chapel, stairs and walkways. Visitors come for this layered landscape rather than for any standing medieval building.

What to know

  • This is not a standing castle but an earthwork mound where only the landform survives.
  • The site lies about 90 metres west of the Poxau parish church of St. Georg und Martin.
  • The mound now carries a Way of the Cross with chapel, stairs and walkways, already in place before 1726.
  • Visiting mainly means reading the shape of the ground, the semicircular ditch and the cone it isolates.
  • There are no set opening hours or admission fees, as this is an open outdoor site.
