The Bischofsburg in Wittstock/Dosse stands on the site of a former residence of the bishops of Havelberg, begun in the 13th century and built into the town's defensive walls. Only the medieval gate tower has survived from the original complex, having served over time as an administrative seat, a barn and even a youth hostel before becoming a museum building. It now houses two exhibitions, one on the history of the surrounding region and one on the Thirty Years' War, which struck the town hard.
