To make a day of it

Alte Burg Rotenhain stands in Rotenhain (Westerwaldkreis), in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.

The Alte Burg near Rotenhain stands on the site of a medieval motte in the Westerwald, built in the second half of the 13th century and so poorly documented historically that it only ever received this provisional name, meaning simply the Old Castle. What visitors see today is not an original ruin but a complete reconstruction carried out between 2009 and 2012 by the local Historica association, built directly on the footprint of the medieval foundations uncovered during archaeological excavations. Inside stands the original well, six metres deep and still functional, its water kept remarkably clear by a natural filtering layer of clay and fine sand. The building's outward appearance, including its windows, doors and roofline, is a free reconstruction, since no archaeological evidence survived to guide those details.

What to know

  • The current building is a modern reconstruction (2009-2012), not a preserved medieval ruin.
  • The original six-metre-deep well is still visible and functional inside.
  • The interior is used today as an event space decorated with medieval-style motifs.
  • No information is available regarding opening hours, admission fees or accessibility.
