To make a day of it

Alte Bürg stands in Möckmühl (Landkreis Heilbronn), in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.

The Alte Bürg is what remains, largely below ground, of a medieval fortification on a rocky spur above Möckmühl, between the Seckach and Hannackerklinge valleys. No walls still stand, but the artificial ditch that once separated the site from the surrounding plateau is still clearly traceable in the terrain. Excavations carried out in the 1960s uncovered pottery, arrowheads, knives and silver coins dating from the twelfth and early thirteenth centuries. This is a place valued less for standing architecture than for its historical depth, where visitors must picture what the ground no longer shows.

What to know

  • No walls remain standing; the site is best understood through the terrain itself, especially the ditch that once isolated the spur.
  • Reaching the site involves walking outdoors over natural ground, without any tourist infrastructure.
  • Objects found during excavations are not displayed on site.
  • This is a short visit, suited more to those interested in archaeology and local history than to typical sightseeing.
  • There are no set hours or fees, as the site sits in the open and is freely accessible.
