Abschnittsbefestigung Andechs stands in Andechs (Landkreis Starnberg), in Bavaria, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
This earthwork fortification sits on a ridge above the Ammersee lake, roughly nine hundred metres northwest of the well-known Andechs monastery. It is not a castle in the usual sense but a large enclosed plateau, about two hundred fifty by four hundred metres, bounded by earthen ramparts and a now-levelled ditch. Archaeologists link it to an early medieval refuge built during the time of the Hungarian raids. Visitors come mainly for the setting and the landscape, since the surviving earthworks are modest and have been worn down by centuries of farming and forestry.
What to know
- This is an open-air archaeological site, with no building or standing ruin to visit.
- It lies away from Andechs monastery itself, reached via a forest path along the ridge.
- The visible earthworks are only a few metres high and require a careful eye to spot.
- There are no opening hours or admission fees, as the site is an open field with no visitor facilities.
- The ground is partly wooded and used for farming, so sturdy outdoor footwear is advisable.
