What the French Ministry of Culture records

Ce château du 17e siècle, en pierres et briques, a été remis en état au début du 20e siècle par Roger Martin du Gard, à qui il appartient depuis 1925. C'est là qu'il a écrit toute son oeuvre, que subsiste sa bibliothèque et qu'il a reçu tous ses amis de la Nouvelle Revue Française (Albert Camus, André Gide, Jean Cocteau, Raymond Radiguet, Louis Jouvet, André Malraux, Georges Duhamel). Un très beau parc du 17e siècle a été remodelé en partie et prolongé vers 1800 par un parc à l'anglaise (composition du paysage et décor d'inspiration maçonnique). A partir de 1926, Roger Martin du Gard a ouvert des perspectives et des vues panoramiques sur Bellême et a renforcé les points sensibles par l'apport de statues antiques.
