The castle of Puech Mascou is today reduced to a site on a hilltop above the Agout river, near the village of Giroussens in the Tarn. Built by the Trencavel family in the 11th century, it passed through several hands, including the viscounts of Lautrec, the counts of Comminges and the lords of Foix, before becoming royal property. Burned down in 1562 and abandoned during the following century, only an underground gallery and traces of the original earthworks remain. Visitors come here for the history and the setting rather than for standing ruins.
