To make a day of it

Château de Roquenaud stands in Lavaur (Tarn), in the Occitanie region of France. No visits are on record for this building.

Roquenaud castle stands in the commune of Lavaur, in the Tarn department, on the site once known as Saint-Eugène and already marked on the Cassini map. Built in the 18th century, it consists of a rectangular main building flanked by two lower pavilions, its white-rendered façades and Italian-style gallery giving it a neoclassical air. Around the house lie extensive outbuildings and an English-style park laid out at the end of the 19th century, remnants of a once substantial agricultural estate.

What to know

  • In the 19th century the château belonged to the Bermond family, whose son Alexandre, a member of parliament, lived there.
  • The original north-west wing disappeared at the end of the 19th century, replaced by large outbuildings.
  • The current park, laid out between 1890 and 1895 first by the Bonamy brothers and then by J-A Escarpet, replaced an earlier French-style garden.
  • The outbuildings, running north to south west of the château, form three pavilions with roofs featuring dormer windows known as lucarnes en chien-assis.
