In Petit-Mars, in the Loire-Atlantique region, the château du Pont-Hus stands on a site that has been fortified since the 11th century, reshaped over a turbulent history. The medieval stronghold of the La Muse lords was torn down by royal order in the 17th century, before a new château was built in 1773 by the marquis de Goyon. The estate still bears the marks of the fighting between republicans and royalist insurgents in 1793, when it was partly burned.
