What the French Ministry of Culture records

L'histoire du fort des évêques de Périgueux, dont le donjon a été transformé en clocher au 17e siècle, est intimement liée à celle de l'église qui était autrefois la chapelle du château. Il s'agit d'une résidence fortifiée des 12e et 13e siècles, et non d'une forteresse. Trois ailes entouraient une cour carrée, mais seule l'aile occidentale est restée debout avec sa tour médiane en saillie et sa galerie de bois desservant le premier étage. Au-dessus du château et aux abords de l'église, un cimetière est disposé en terrasses où sont disséminées de très nombreuses tombes anciennes.
