Standing at the edge of Chambéry, the château des Comtes de Challes has occupied the village of Challes-les-Eaux since the fifteenth century, raised on the site of an even older wine-growing estate. Built by the counts of Challes and later passed to the Milliet family, marquis de Challes, the building has since been converted into a hotel operating within its historic walls. Visitors can walk through a two-hectare wooded park with views toward the surrounding mountains, and see a vaulted fifteenth-century cellar where thousands of bottles are aged. The house is also linked to the writer Louis Aragon, who spent part of his childhood there.
