Set on a rocky spur above the village of Barby, the Château de la Bâtie overlooks a bend of the Leysse river at the foot of Mont Peney. A feudal stronghold raised by the Seyssel family in the 13th century and reworked during the Renaissance, it still shows a double defensive wall, a round keep, the 1472 Tour des Orgues and a chapel holding Gallo-Roman mosaics brought from Arbin. The site bears the marks of several building phases, from the pointed gateway with its portcullis groove to the mullioned windows of the Renaissance wing.
