What the French Ministry of Culture records

Les Brétignolles sont citées au 9e siècle dans un diplôme de Charles le Chauve et appartenaient alors au chapitre de Saint-Martin. Elles devinrent la propriété de l'abbaye de Marmoutier au 11e siècle. Par la suite, elles passèrent à divers familles. Le château fut probablement construit par Jean Bernard, gouverneur de Loches en 1447. La chapelle fut édifiée en 1507. Le château se compose d'un bâtiment rectangulaire aux angles flanqués de tours (deux cylindriques, une polygonale et une carrée). Les communs qui se développent à l'ouest du château furent ajoutés au 18e siècle.
