To make a day of it

Château de Vergy stands in L'Étang-Vergy (Côte-d'Or), in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region of France. No visits are on record for this building.

On the commune of Reulle-Vergy, atop a rocky spur overlooking the valley between Dijon and Beaune, lie the remains of a medieval stronghold torn down on the orders of King Henri IV in 1610. The site sits on a long, narrow ridge rising above 500 metres, prized in the Middle Ages for its natural defensive position. Visitors come both for the history of the powerful lords of Vergy and for the view over the vineyard slopes of the Côte de Nuits.

What to know

  • The site today consists of ruins and remains rather than a restored castle.
  • Access is along a ridge path from the north, the only approach with a gentle gradient.
  • Reaching the top of the spur requires a reasonable level of fitness, as the other slopes are steep.
  • The Saint-Saturnin church and the ruins of Saint-Vivant abbey stand close by, along the same path.
  • As this is an open-air site, no set opening hours or fees apply, and visits are made freely depending on season and weather.
