To make a day of it

Château de Thoire stands in Matafelon-Granges (Ain), in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of France. No visits are on record for this building.

The château de Thoire gave its name to one of the notable noble families of the medieval Bugey region, formed around the late twelfth century through the union of the houses of Thoire and Villars. Built on a rocky outcrop above the left bank of the Ain river, overlooking the village of Thoirette, it was the original seat of a lineage whose influence reached as far as Bresse and the Vaud region. The family abandoned this stronghold in the thirteenth century for the fortress of Montréal, and the line died out in the early fifteenth century. The site today lies within the commune of Matafelon-Granges, in the Ain department.
