The location overlooks the valleys of the Ain, the Valouse and the Sancon to the east, and the érythrônes plateau to the west. Visitors come less for standing architecture than for the site's turbulent past, repeatedly besieged and rebuilt during medieval conflicts before its final destruction in 1595.
