To make a day of it

Château de Saint-James stands in Saint-James (Manche), in the Normandie region of France. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

Of the stronghold that once stood above Saint-James from the 11th century onward, nothing remains standing today: the structure was destroyed in 1590 and has vanished from the landscape. The site lies on what is now the place du Calvaire, at a spot known as la Haye de Terre, where an earthen rampart once marked the border between Normandy and Brittany. Visitors come here less for a surviving building than for the history of a fortress fought over for centuries by Norman dukes, Breton rulers and French kings.

What to know

  • No ruins or standing remains of the medieval castle can be seen on site today.
  • The location corresponds to the present-day place du Calvaire, in the centre of Saint-James.
  • Only the Redoute tower survives from the 11th-century ramparts.
  • Visiting means identifying the historical layout within today's town rather than touring a building.
  • There are no opening hours, fees or visitor facilities, since this is not a museum site.
