The château de Saint-Germain stands at Gaugeac, in the Dordogne, on a strategic point that once controlled the entrance to the Dropt valley from the 15th century onward. Built as an outpost for the powerful château de Biron, it retains one round tower left intact with its watch post and cannon slit, while another tower, its top removed in the 17th century, houses an original spiral staircase. The main residential block and its monumental fireplaces reflect successive alterations, including additions made in the 18th and 19th centuries. The site has served as a filming location for several swashbuckler films, including a scene from La Fille de d'Artagnan.
