The ruins of the château de Poligny, also called château de Grimont, stand on a rocky spur above the town, at the entrance to the reculée de Poligny in the Jura region. The stronghold is believed to date from the 9th century, built on the heights on the initiative of Girart de Roussillon, and once formed, with its keep and towers, a fortified enclosure of roughly three hectares. Dismantled in the 17th century under the reigns of Louis XIII and Louis XIV, it now survives only as scattered remains, though the site still commands a wide view that explains its former role as a military stronghold between the duchy and county of Burgundy.
