To make a day of it

Château de Mirebeau stands in Mirebeau-sur-Bèze (Côte-d'Or), in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region of France. No visits are on record for this building.

At the north-western edge of Mirebeau-sur-Bèze, in the Côte-d'Or, stands an earth mound roughly ten metres high, the only tangible remnant of a stronghold built in the 15th century. Sections of curtain wall and a round tower some nine metres across still crown the summit, evidence of a fortified site that endured sieges, demolitions and fires from the 11th century onward. Visitors come here less for a standing building than to trace, in the shape of the ground, the outline of a vanished castle.

What to know

  • This is a ruined site reduced to an earthen mound and a few wall sections, not a furnished or inhabited castle.
  • Reaching the top of the mound involves climbing a grassy slope, requiring some physical effort and suitable footwear.
  • The site is maintained and excavated by a local team, so its condition may vary depending on the season.
  • No verified information is available on opening hours or admission fees, as this is an open-air ruin.
