What the French Ministry of Culture records

Au 12e siècle, la châtellenie de Marval appartenait aux vicomtes de Limoges, puis à ceux de Rochechouart. Le château fut détruit en 1569 par l'incendie allumé par les troupes calvinistes. Il en resta le sous-sol (salle dite des gardes, l'escalier ainsi que la partie Renaissance à l'est). Il fut reconstruit en grande partie au 17e siècle. La partie médiévale présente un ensemble caractéristique de caves voûtées ainsi que la salle des gardes présentant un plafond à caissons peints et dorés de style Louis XVI. L'escalier part de ce niveau et est surmonté d'un plafond à la française. A l'arrière, la partie 16e siècle s'ouvre par une porte ornée d'un décor sculpté. La partie du 17e siècle est la plus vaste du château. Elle se compose d'un corps de logis principal, flanqué de deux pavillons. L'intérieur de cette partie conserve des décors d'époque. Le château conserve ses anciens fossés.
