The château de Mareste stands in Chavannes-sur-Reyssouze, in the Bresse area of the Ain department, on an estate whose oldest section is thought to date back to the Middle Ages, when it housed a commandery of the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem. The current main building, erected around 1610 as a hunting lodge with its farm outbuildings, has never been modernised and retains its Bresse-style timber-and-brick construction. Its façades show typical half-timbering, while a corner gable is topped with a steep four-sided roof covered in polychrome glazed tiles, a feature borrowed from Burgundian architecture. The Mareste family, who acquired the estate through marriage in the 16th century, owned it for more than four centuries.
