In Arthezé, in the Sarthe department, the château de Malicorne has stood since the mid-12th century on a bend of the Sarthe river, a site chosen to watch over the waterway from the surrounding marshland. A private house that is still lived in, it passed through five successive families, from the Beaumanoir de Lavardin to the Oudinot, dukes of Reggio, and it recalls the marquise de Sévigné, who stayed there and wrote letters to her daughter. Only the ground floor and the marquise's bedroom are open to visitors, alongside a star-shaped park laid out in the 17th century where a working Bollée ram pump can still be seen.
