Château de la Roche Racan stands in Saint-Paterne-Racan (Indre-et-Loire), in the Centre-Val de Loire region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: second quarter of the 17th century). Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
What the French Ministry of Culture records
Le fief est connu depuis le 14e siècle, et relevait de la prévôté d'Oe. Le château actuel fut construit en 1636 par Honorat de Bueil, baron de Racan. L'édifice comprenait deux pavillons, réunis par un bâtiment transversal dont le rez-de-chaussée était percé d'une porte reliant la cour nord à la cour d'honneur. Dans le pavillon Est se trouvait la chapelle dont l'accès se faisait par l'escalier dit du Fer à cheval. Ce pavillon Est ainsi que les deux tiers orientaux du bâtiment central ont disparu. La terrasse fut établie en 1880 sur les substructions de l'ancien château, et refaite en 1895. L'édifice actuel comprend le pavillon Est, et la partie ouest du bâtiment central. L'angle nord-ouest est accompagné d'une tourelle polygonale soutenue par un éperon de maçonnerie. A l'est, une porte limitant la cour d'honneur est percée dans le mur soutenant la terrasse supérieure, et donne accès à l'escalier du Fer à cheval. Plus au nord, une coquille sculptée dans le parement du même mur, est un vestige de la salle à manger de Racan.
