Le domaine de La Bourlie a évolué avec les besoins et les modes, marqué par la personnalité des trois familles qui s'y sont succédées. Au 18e siècle, le château défensif est transformé en résidence aristocratique, avec ouverture des façades sur des terrasses et aménagement d'un jardin sur l'axe d'une enfilade ornementale en trois parties. Au 19e siècle, Marie-Amanda Blanche de Commarque, passionnée de botanique, créé un parc s'intégrant dans l'environnement naturel.
