To make a day of it

Château de la Bouëre stands in Beaupréau-en-Mauges (Maine-et-Loire), in the Pays de la Loire region of France. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

In a field in the Mauges region, at Beaupréau-en-Mauges, stands a solitary tower, the last remnant of a vanished château. Around fifteen metres high with walls two metres thick, it is thought to date back nearly a thousand years and was built for defence. The adjoining manor house was torn down in 1935, leaving only the tower, which bore witness to the violence of the Vendée war. A site valued more for its historical weight than for architectural grandeur.

What to know

  • Only the tower remains today, the château that stood beside it was demolished in 1935.
  • Access to the site mainly happens during events organised by the association that has been preserving it since 2021.
  • The monument stands alone in a field, so visitors should expect to walk to reach it.
  • Consolidation work has been carried out on the tower, but there is no regular open visiting schedule.
  • No fixed opening hours or admission fees are known for this site.
