The château de la Barre stands in Férolles-Attilly, in Seine-et-Marne, within grounds crossed by the Réveillon stream, a tributary of the Yerres. Built in the 17th century, it was the birthplace in 1745 of François-Jean Lefebvre de La Barre, a young nobleman executed in Abbeville in 1766 for blasphemy, a case that became famous after Voltaire took up his defence posthumously. The building seen today dates from a late 19th-century reconstruction that revived the earlier century's style.
