To make a day of it

Château de Jarnac stands in Jarnac (Charente), in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region of France. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

The château de Jarnac no longer stands: it is a vanished historical site on the île Vaujompe beside the Charente river, known today only through old drawings and engravings. A first keep was built there in the 10th century, and the stronghold then passed through many hands, from the Plantagenets to the Lusignan family, before being razed in 1387. Partly rebuilt by the Chabot family in the 15th century as a cluster of six round towers, it was later transformed into a landscaped park in the 18th century before disappearing entirely during the Empire period.

What to know

  • The château has completely disappeared, and there is no building left to visit on the site today.
  • The site stood on the île Vaujompe, beside the Charente river, where the town of Jarnac now lies.
  • As early as 1837, a writer noted that only an old gateway remained, itself threatened with demolition by the town council.
  • Everything known about its appearance comes from period drawings and engravings, as no standing remains can be seen.
  • It is therefore not a visitable destination but a historical landmark within the present-day town of Jarnac.
