What the French Ministry of Culture records

Le château et le fief sont attestés au 15e siècle, mais l'emplacement actuel n'est bâti qu'à partir de 1825. Le corps central du château est construit alors pour la duchesse de Charost. En 1938, le château est acheté par Charles de Bestegui, millionnaire cosmopolite ayant fait fortune dans l'exploitation des mines d'argent. Lassé par son appartement des Champs-Elysées (construit par Le Corbusier) , Bestegui cherchait un château non protégé où il pouvait donner libre cours à ses goûts historicisants. De 1939 jusqu'à sa mort en 1970, en collaboration avec l'architecte et décorateur Emilio Terry ("père du style Louis XVII") , il fait agrandir et aménager le château dans divers styles. Un théâtre de 250 places est créé dans l'aile est. Le parc, redessiné par Bestegui et Terry entre 1950 et 1970, est doté d'une douzaine de fabriques inspirées de modèles du 16e au 18e siècles. On a vu dans cet ensemble l'annonce d'un esprit post-moderne.
