To make a day of it

Château de Francheville stands in Francheville (Rhône), in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: fourth quarter of the 12th century). Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

Perched on a rocky spur overlooking the Yzeron valley west of Lyon, the ruins of the château de Francheville mark the site of a fortress founded in the late 12th century by the archbishop of Lyon, Renaud de Forez. What remains today is a two-thirds ruined keep and sections of granite rubble walls, evidence of a stronghold that once guarded a crossroads of ancient routes. The site is visited as a ruin, without reconstruction, set in a natural setting at the heart of the village.
