Des chevaliers de la maison de Couyssels sont mentionnés dans la seconde moitié du 13e siècle. La construction du château actuel remonte à la fin du 15e siècle, mais conserve certaines parties datant du 12e siècle. Au 16e siècle, Louis de Laval fait de son château l'un des principaux centres où se réunissaient les protestants de la région. Le château était déjà abandonné au moment de la Révolution.
