To make a day of it

Château de Courtrai stands in Lille (Nord), in the Hauts-de-France region of France. No visits are on record for this building.

The château de Courtrai no longer stands: it was a stronghold raised from 1299 northeast of Lille on the order of Philip the Fair, meant to secure the city after it fell to the French in 1297. Straddling the old road to Bruges, it formed a large irregular fortified enclosure of nearly three hectares, flanked by towers and surrounded by a moat fed by the Deûle river. Dismantled from 1577 at the city's request, its site was absorbed into Lille's urban fabric, and only the layout of certain present day streets still traces its outline.

What to know

  • There is no building left to visit: the site was entirely dismantled from 1577 onward.
  • The former location lies today within the Lille district around the rue des Tours, rue des Célestines and rue de Courtrai.
  • No excavation has been carried out on the former front gate, whose exact location remains unknown.
  • A visit amounts to an urban walk tracing the old layout within the present street plan.
