To make a day of it

Château de Chilly-Mazarin stands in Chilly-Mazarin (Essonne), in the Île-de-France region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 17th century). Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

The château de Chilly-Mazarin retains, from its 17th century enclosure, a moat, a bridge and a pavilion attributed to Jacques Lemercier, a leading architect under Louis XIII. The park also holds former water inspection chambers dating from the reign of Louis XIV, remnants of an old hydraulic network. The site is visited mainly for these outdoor features, traces of an estate once linked to the Ruzé d'Effiat and Mazarin families.

What to know

  • The monument is protected as a listed historic monument (inscription).
  • The protected elements concern the moat, the bridge, the pavilion on the moat and former inspection chambers in the park, not the whole building.
  • No visiting hours or admission fees could be verified, so checking locally is advisable.
  • The visit focuses mainly on outdoor features of the park and the moat.
