What the French Ministry of Culture records

A la fin du 12e siècle, le château et la seigneurie furent achetés par Raymond V de Toulouse qui en donna la garde au chef routier Durand Mercader. C'est sans doute alors que le château fut commencé. Au 13e siècle, construction du puits, du mur ceinturant la colline et d'une palissade sur ce mur. Le domaine appartint quelques temps à Richard Coeur de Lion. En 1356, pendant la guerre de Cent ans, le capitaine anglais Jean Chandos s'empara du château. Durant les guerres de Religion, il tomba aux mains des Protestants. L'édifice se présente comme un quadrilatère flanqué de quatre tours ronde (12e ou 13e siècle). La partie supérieure du château fut rasée à la Révolution, à l'exception d'un côté construit au 15e siècle. Le soubassement du château comprend des salles de garde voûtées, uniques dans la région, dont l'accès se fait par une série de galeries et d'escaliers.
