The château de Boumois stands in the shelter of the Loire's flood embankment, in the commune of Gennes-Val-de-Loire, a few kilometres from Saumur. Built at the turning point between the Gothic era and the Renaissance, it combines the still-Gothic lines of its main building with Renaissance ornamentation such as twisted colonnettes. Visitors find an enclosure surrounded by a moat, a gateway inspired by an Italian model, and an original dovecote still standing in the courtyard. The building has had an eventful history, from the sale of its stained-glass chapel in the nineteenth century to damage suffered during a 1944 bombing raid.
