What the French Ministry of Culture records
L'origine du château remonte au 10e siècle. Le donjon a été érigé au début du 12e siècle, puis entouré d'une forteresse au 13e siècle, par Saint-Louis. Cette forteresse se composait de quatre tours rondes réunies par d'épaisses courtines. Au 14e siècle, l'édifice est transformé en logis de plaisance par Louis 1er d'Anjou, donnant au château l'essentiel de sa silhouette actuelle. A la fin du 16e siècle, d'importants remparts sont érigés autour du château.
