To make a day of it

Château de Bois-du-Maine stands in Rennes-en-Grenouilles (Mayenne), in the Pays de la Loire region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 15th century, 16th century, 17th century). The building is privately owned and no visits are on record.

On the bank of the Mayenne river, at Rennes-en-Grenouilles, the château de Bois-du-Maine stands with a main building flanked by two large towers, the northern one topped with machicolations and dipping its base into the water. Behind its classical appearance, the structure conceals masonry dating back to the 15th century, possibly earlier in its lower parts. Visitors come to see how 17th and 18th century alterations sit alongside older defensive features, gun-loop towers, vaulted cellars and an underground chamber lit only by narrow slits.
