To make a day of it

Château de Bellevue stands in Meudon (Hauts-de-Seine), in the Île-de-France region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument. No visits are on record for this building.

Of the château built in the mid-18th century for Madame de Pompadour on the Meudon plateau overlooking the Seine, only scattered traces remain within today's urban fabric. Bought back by Louis XV, enlarged under Gabriel, and later home to the king's daughters, the building was destroyed during the Revolution and its grounds subdivided into building plots in the 19th century. What can be seen now is limited to remnants of a terrace, set within a residential neighbourhood that now occupies the former royal estate.

What to know

  • This is not a château open for visits but a site of remains embedded in a residential district of Meudon.
  • Only remnants of a terrace are protected as a historic monument, listed in 1974.
  • A visit amounts to an outdoor walk through the streets of the housing development built on the former estate.
  • There are no opening hours or admission fees since there is no building or museum space to enter.
  • The site lies near Bellevue railway station, which helps locate the former château's position.
