To make a day of it

Château de Beaumont-sur-Sarthe stands in Beaumont-sur-Sarthe (Sarthe), in the Pays de la Loire region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument. The building is privately owned and no visits are on record.

Overlooking the Sarthe valley, this Romanesque keep dating from the 11th and 12th centuries was once a stronghold in the defence of the Maine region against the dukes of Normandy and later the English during the Hundred Years' War. Dismantled on the orders of Louis XI at the end of the 15th century to curb the power of local lords' fortresses, only its base and a corner tower remain standing today. The ruins still convey the original scale of the stronghold, whose walls once rose thirty metres high.
